The religion, i don't know what Oxford says about but i do know about what it means to me. History tells us about so many things about how people lived, learned, survived and evolved, but we can not see history in isolation we will have to have an holistic view about all pervasive aspects together to understand the situation.
By observing the Multi-Facets society and it's order, i can say that the form, we know religion today was not always present or was not it was meant for. I see religion as an "Order" of society to lead good, healthy, calm and peaceful life. For intense, "Surya Namaskar", is a way of worshiping as religion says. It is also a fabulous exercise. It helps to produce vitamin D through skin in presence of Sun Light. But when elders (in ancient time) taught his younger they told it as the way to please God Sun (May be). The information traveled a long time. We know when a communication travels long distance (in space or time) it deteriorates and fell short of some information. Possibly this is what happened to religion.
Today, in modern democracy where people elect the leaders to rule. The leaders speak the language that resonates with masses. In India where we have a long culture of tolerance and long history of blooded communal violence. The religion always resonated with the masses and divides whole nation in the fraction opposing to each other. This situation gives a luxury to politicians to skip the complex issues of economy, development, budget & social security of masses and to go with the political trumps of religion. Possibly therefore it is said that in democracy people don't get ruled more that they deserve.
India has so many India with the geographical boundary of nation. We have an aged population, vibrant professionals, fundamentalists. But proportion have changed vibrant groups of professionals have out numbered all the other groups. This groups is seeking vigorously the development, defying primordial affiliations, leaving caste-ism and menace like untouchability. They are seeking materialistic world measuring everything in dollers and rupees. Now this is the situation where religion is most required of, but not in the version as politician and fundamentalists are advocating. They all require of great guidance for "Social Order" which suits the environment. They want a new culture to be developed flexibility. They want religion to be amended for making it logical. It is not modern obsession but a political trump, which require great social scrutiny and modification to gift every one calm, peaceful, happy & healthy life.
